The use of anabolic steroids has some short term advantages for bodybuilders however, I think it’s reasonable to state that it’s long term harmful effects far outweigh these advantages.
In this section we shall take a look at what side effects steroid use may yield in bodybuilders.
(Just to get this straight: steroids are not nutritional supplements, supplements simply provide a surplus of nutrients whilst steroids alter the mechanisms and chemical processes involved in the creation and maintenance of muscle tissue)
Steroid side effects:
1) The suppression of testosterone production:
It would appear that the body has a well balanced system which tells it when and how much testosterone to produce to keep levels optimal. By getting a surplus of testosterone into the system from an outside source one will effectively send the endocrine system the signal to stop producing its own. This phenomenon, in time, can lead to a permanent decrease in testosterone production, which can lead to gynecomastia and a number of other problems.
2) Androgenic effects:
These include hairloss, a sharp increase in sebum production, prostate enlargement, acne.
These effects are also due to the messing up of the endocrine system.
3) Blood pressure problems.
4) Cardiovascular issues:
The effect of steroids on the thyroid glad will result in increased levels of insulin and decreased glucose tolerance. Blood clotting and cholesterol levels will also go haywire.
5) Liver problems:
Oral steroids will get to your liver. They radically increase the probability of liver cancer, but at any rate, they will cause problems ranging from hemorrhage to progressive cholestasis.
Teens should never use steroids, as the risks they pose are more accentuated in this - most vulnerable - phase of body development.
Women on steroids will almost certainly turn a lot more masculine with changes in their voice, and anatomy, increased body hair growth and enlargement of the clitoris. Because of the fact that they’re extra sensitive to testosterone these effects will be permanent even after the discontinuing of the steroid use. |
