The importance of keeping oneself motivated in the gym is imperative in maintaining concentration. Concentration and focus is needed so that one doesn’t get sloppy in the execution of different exercises, spend too much time talking and resting between sets, thus making a mess of the whole workout, wasting precious time and energy.
One of the factors that cause loss of focus is boredom. Doing the exact same program every time you go to the gym can get quite monotonous after a while and why not just call it what it is: boring. The way to prevent this is by varying your training program. Drop some of the exercises and adopt new ones. Do this every 3-6 months, and you’ll never feel bored in the gym.
Avoiding boredom however, is the least of the benefits that a diverse program can give you. Your muscles will get used to the type of exercises you routinely do and the type of strain these put on them. By getting used to the specific type of effort you subject them to, the body again manages to avoid growth - the very last weapon in its arsenal to combat excess workloads. Varying the type of exercises you do can take the body by surprise and subject your muscles to efforts they’re not used to. This basically shocks them into growth again, as they have no other alternative to cope with the situation in the short term.
There are basic exercises that should always be kept in the training schedule, however, on more advanced levels, the number of exercises designed to define and refine muscles is a lot bigger thus presenting a greater opportunity to diversification.
Besides being a great shocker, diversification of the program can contribute to the thorough development of every single muscle from every single angle, taking the multi-exercise/musclegroup approach one step further.
